Educational Background:
I received a K-12 Multiple Subjects credential as well as two single subject credentials in English and Social Science from San Francisco State University in January of 1987. I have been teaching continuously since then. In 1994, I completed a Language Development Specialist Credential. Throughout most of the 1990's I was extensively involved with the development of San Francisco Unified School District's science curriculum through the City Science Program providing training at my site and at district inservices. I became a Nationally Board Certified Teacher in 2003. I have been on my school sites leadership team, been our site union representative and taken up extensive professional development.
Teaching Experience:
1/87 to 6/89
My first assignment was as a long term substitute in a 5th Grade class at Treasure Island School. I was invited to return to Treasure Island the following fall to take an "overflow" class, and though the assignment was challenging, I received satisfactory or highly satisfactory evaluations.
8/89 to 6/92
At Edison School I took the place of a teacher who had been removed from her classroom. The circumstances were traumatic for the children and so I worked to reestablish a quality learning environment for them. During the first year at Edison I began to teach singing, garnered a grant to initiate a garden project, and found ways to help students resolve their differences through a Conflict Manager's program.
The second year, I agreed to become an ELD instructor and have since become credentialed as a Language Development Specialist. I was introduced to the Slingerland technique and have modified its strong phonics component to meet the needs of the English Language Learning (ELL) students I taught. While at Edison, I also joined City Science, a collaboration between the University of California Medical Center and San Francisco Unified School District, to improve the science curriculum in the district. Through that program I have managed workshops, given inservices, and mentored other teachers in using the science curriculum.
8/92 to 2014
I have been teaching at Hillcrest Elementary School. Although I have been working mainly at the second grade level I have experience with 4th and 5th grade classes. In 2003 I passed the National Boards and became certified as a specialist in K - 3rd grade.
I have worked at my site in various ways including: the School Site Committee, Grade Level Groups, the Science Leadership Team, and the Gardening Committee. I have participated in the interviewing process at our site and mentored new teachers. As a result of encouraging my site to participate in a computer recycling program, we had more than 50 computers donated to the school at one point. For several years I have organized a chess club open to the first through fifth grades. I also instruct my students in singing; I find it is useful in many ways.
2014, December: This is when I retired. Personal health factors and emergency family matters dissuaded me from continuing on to finish the school year.
Personal Interests
I enjoy writing and have had Haiku and other forms of poetry published. Other interests include: creating music, reading, chess, camping, backpacking, and cycling. I also spend time creating and developing my website. Next year I will be working on the website for my school. I am also preparing to learn how to create multimedia documents as I work with my family to produce a digitalized family album.
